Sunday Morning...

Being a Rams fan has been quite painful for me the past 3 seasons. The Scott Linehan era began and ended in a couple blinks of an eye - okay, so quite a few losses were mashed in between. Jim Haslett took over 4 games into this season. They won a couple of games in a row (Dallas and Washington, seriously, what were you doing?). Subsequently, we have seen 9 straight losses. It has gotten so bad that the games have been blacked out on TV since the Rams couldn't sell out games to America's most popular sport in America's most popular league, the NFL. So what a pleasant surprise it was this morning to turn on the TV and check my TV guide and see that the Rams were on TV today! Okay, so they are on the road. But still...

And now, my abbreviated random musings...

- When healthy, Steven Jackson is a beast.

- Sometimes I find myself betting on teams and losing on them every week. They will cover this week, right? **COUGH** Washington Redskins.

- The Bears offense...terrible.

- Shootouts in hockey are the only good thing to come out of the lockout.

- Kobe Bryant is the man.

Picks through New Years eve (with a new little feature - the % of public bets courtesy of thespread.com)...

Nevada vs Maryland +2.5 (56% of the public is betting MD)
Western Michigan +2.5 (34%)
vs Rice
Oregon vs Oklahoma St -3 (60%)
Air Force +3.5 (33%)
vs Houston
Pittsburgh vs Oregon St -2.5 (56%)
Boston College -3.5 (74%)
vs Vanderbilt
Minnesota +9 (27%) vs Kansas
LSU vs Georgia Tech -4 (64%)

Good luck...

Life of a Gambling Addict

Last weekend was pretty rough. With heavy bets on BYU (NCAA) and Chicago, Houston, and Minnesota (NFL), my balance with my bookie is near zero. What does that mean? More bets! I have a lot of ground to make up folks! Before I go onto my non-locks, more thoughts...

- As a Mizzou Grad, there isn't much that can pump me up during the Holiday Season like our annual clash with Illinois on the Hardwood for the Braggin' Rights Game. Eight straight losses have been painful. However, Mizzou is ranked for the first time since 2004 and the season looks promising. Oh yeah, nice football season Illinois. Juuuuuuuuice!!! <------ What a joke...
- Last night the Bears forced OT. They were laying 4 points to the Packers. So, going into OT gave me a glimmer of hope. I wasn't rooting for the Bears, I was rooting for the Bears to score a TD only. A FG does me no good. Robbie Gould hits a FG. Sweet...money down the drain...

- For the millionth time this past weekend I got the "NBA sucks. They travel too much." SHUT. UP. The NBA is the best basketball out there. Period. No, I'm not talking about atmosphere. College B-ball will always have that. But if you are talking pure, freak athleticism...NBA is where it is at. I can watch a random NBA game on any given night and always find myself amazed at some high-flying circus act dunk or drive to the lane. Not so in college basketball. Just sayin'...

- The MLB luxury tax has hit up the Yankees for $26.9 million this year. Yikes. The Yankees answer? Let's spend more money! Hurray!

- Missouri Pro football has gotten so bad, both the Chiefs and the Rams had their president/GM's "resign". It could be worse...see Detroit if you have any questions.

On to picks....

TCU vs Boise St. +3
Notre Dame -2 vs Hawaii
Florida Atlantic +7 vs Central Michigan
West Virginia -1.5 vs North Carolina
Wisconsin +5.5 vs Florida St.
Miami +7.5 vs California
Northern Illinois -1 vs Louisiana Tech
NC State +7 vs Rutgers
Northwestern vs Missouri -12.5 (5-star Alumni Special)

Random Musings...

Really, there hasn't been much going on in the sports world that is that exciting as of late. College Football is in a lull. NFL only happens once a week (for the most part...does anyone actually watch the Thursday night games?). MLB's biggest news is Rafael Furcal...yawn. NHL, is well, the NHL (I could probably blog a 10-page essay on this one. NHL used to be my favorite sport. Something called the lock-out happened and I magically lost interest). College Basketball isn't at it's exciting stage yet. Once conference season gets going, things start to heat up. NBA is the same way. It's fun to watch a random game on TBS during the middle of the week, but you can't get too excited knowing that the marathon playoffs do not arrive until spring. However, I do have some thoughts...

- Check out Mayne Street on espn.com. Really funny stuff. I want to be just like Kenny Mayne when I grow up.

- The Red Sox are in/out of talks for Mark Teixeira. I'm at the point that anything Boston Sports related makes me want to throw up. After years of disappointment and pain, Boston sports fans have enough memories for 3 lifetimes. It's sickening.

- I finished 9-5 in my fantasy football season this year...and managed to miss the playoffs with a 4-way tie for 3rd place. I was last out of the 4 way tie in a tie-breaker and didn't make the top 4. So with the Rams being beyond terrible and no fantasy implications, the only way to make this NFL interesting is?....Betting!!! I. Love. Betting. Period.

College Bowl season starts tomorrow. This means I will give a pick on every game. No in-depth analysis. Just too many games to cover. But here we go...PICKS FOR THIS WEEKEND!!!

Navy vs Wake Forest -2.5
Fresno St. -3
vs Colorado St
Memphis +11.5 vs South Florida
BYU +3 vs Arizona
Troy vs Southern Mississippi +4.5

Merry Christmas Everyone. If that offends you, Happy Holidays, or screw you. Either one works for me.

Chiefs and Rams

NFL Football in the state of Missouri is pathetic. PA-THE-TIC. Both at 2-12. Both were losers last year. Both blew 4th quarter leads yesterday. Both did it at home. Both did it in front of thousands of empty seats. Yes, that's right, Camarohead had thousands of empty seats. Still, I was pretty upset when I turned on the television yesterday to find out that the Rams game was blacked out. No sellout means to TV. It was probably for the better, but I guess I like the pain. It's still my team. I have a box of 10,000 baseball cards that are sitting under my childhood bed that are absolutely worthless. I won't throw 'em out. They are still mine. Bad analogy? Probably. But this is my blog...

T.O. Speaks

I got this from espn.com:

When asked whether he was indeed jealous of Romo and Witten's relationship, T.O. said, "What do I have to be jealous of? Look at me, I'm handsome as hell. And anything that goes on, I am going to be the scapegoat. I'm trying to figure out how I make the headlines and I don't even say anything."

I can't really dispute his claim. The man IS handsome is hell. He has muscles on top of muscles. He sure is hell ain't jealous.

College Football Awards...

Take a look at this list...

Maxwell Award (Outstanding Player) - Tim Tebow
Walter Camp Award (Player of the Year Award) - Colt McCoy
Davey O'Brien Award (National Quarterback Award) - Sam Bradford
Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (Outstanding Sr. QB) - Graham Harrell

Confused? Yup. This is pretty dumb. In the spirit of, "Everyone goes home happy!!!", each quarterback was given a different award last night. All four players are quarterbacks. They all play the SAME position. Yet, somehow, the player of the year isn't the most outstanding player or vice versa. In fact, neither the player of the year or the most outstanding player are even the the national quarterback this year.

Decisions were never meant to be difficult, right? What a picture perfect ending...

We Can All Dream...

The baseball Winter Meetings...the time of year we can all dream of picking up the top free agents in baseball. Your home team General Manager is leaking information that your team is in negotiations with a highly coveted free agent...or a blockbuster deal is in the works. We all have hope. The next big deal will get us over the hump and into the playoffs next year...

Then Steinbrenner and the Yanks kill your dreams. Yup, it sucks. Yup, it's reality.

Lock 'Em Up!!!

After going 4-2 on my college picks yesterday, I feel obligated to share my inside information on NFL picks for today. Yes, it's a bit late...but it's better late than never...

Jacksonville @ Chicago -6.5
The Jaguars are probably the most disappointing team in the NFL this year. After a strong playoff run last year, Garrard and the gang are limping into week 14 with a 4-8 record. Problem #1, Matt Jones is your leading receiver. Problem #2, Matt Jones is your leading receiver. Okay, you get it. The Bears are right where most people thought they would be. The offense has actually been a bit better than expected in large part to rookie RB Matt Forte. However, the defense is not what we thought it would be. That all evens out to an evened out 6-6 record. At home, against a sputtering Jax offense, the Bears roll today.

Philadelphia @ New York Giants -6.5
Watch out...the GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-Men have been playing great all year. They have the suffocating defense. They have diverse run-pass offense. They even got rid of the team cancer by having him shoot himself. If you could get rid of one player on your team by having him shoot himself, who would it be? Giants will not lose this week to an up and down Eagles team.

New England -7 @ Seattle
Just trust me on this one.

GAMEDAY!!!!!!

It's days like today that makes being a sports fan pretty, pretty awesome. 'Bama vs Florida for the SEC Championship. Mizzou vs Oklahoma for the Big 12 Championship. Oscar De La Hoya vs Manny Paqcuiao on pay per view tonight. You know what else is awesome?...I can post this while sitting on the shitter. I love America.

NO RESPEK!!!!! Factor

I think 'Bama AT LEAST covers this week against Florida, and I have a couple reasons, neither of which pertains to the talent of either team, which is obviously meaningless in the discussion of which team will be victorious.

1) None of Florida's games this year have even been remotely close. That is, with the exception of the Ole Miss game, which they happened to lose. Alabama is 12-0. In God's Conference. Where it's not that the offenses just flat suck, but that they have to suffer against such tough defenses that even a NFL Pro Bowl offense would struggle to score on ANY team in the SEC!!! There's so much speed and the stadiums are so loud!!! Fucking gag me. But regardless, 'Bama has 12 wins in a conference that you'd have to rank in the top 2. That's an accomplishment. And Saban, while a slimy, slimy bastard, is one hell of a college football coach. (Sidenote: Saban lamented the treatment of Phil Fulmer at Tennessee and Sylvester Croon at Miss St. Nick Saban, beacon of honesty and integrity, is hereby not allowed to lament treatment of any living person / non-living entity. Ever.) And you think Saban isn't gonna have the Crimson Tide, undefeated, #1 ranking, and a TEN POINT DOG ready to play? Which brings me to point # 2.....
2) NO RESPEK!!!!! This sentence undoubtedly came out of the mouth of an Alabama player this week in Tuscaloosa: "YO. WE'S DA #1 TEAM IN DA WHOLE COUNTRY. WE AIN'T LOST A GODDAM GAME TO NOBODYS. AND DEY (the infamous "dey"....who is that?) GON' MAKE US A TEN POINT UNDERDOG??? MAHHHHHHH, DEY DISRESPEKIN' US!!!!" And if you think that the Disrespek Factor doesn't exist, look no further than the Oklahoma Sooners. They absolutely suck balls in big games that they are supposed to win. But make them an underdog in a game and they'll come out with their ass on fire and destroy any team in the country. Andrew Jones, MU tight end, said in the press that they don't need to be afraid of Oklahoma, and that in fact "they need to be scared of us." This game was going to be a blowout anyway, but now there is no way now that Missouri keeps this game within 40. So everyone is slobbin' Gator knob, the Tide is a 10-point dog. Mad disrespek. And I'll save you the suspense of wondering what the Alabama players are going to say after the game if they win: "Nobody believed in us except for the coaches and players in that locker room!!!"

Bama covers.

Just for future reference.....can posts be deleted at a later date?

College Football Picks

I'm not an expert. I don't have in-depth numbers to analyze. Most of my picks are gut feelings. However, I can tout a winning record so far this year. (I could say the same last year up to this point and then all my money went down the tube during bowl season). Having said that, college football picks!!!

Buffalo +15 @ Ball St
I'm not going to pretend I know a ton about MAC Football. I do know that Nate Davis and Ball State are undefeated and have played great all year. However, Buffalo has managed to keep most of their losing efforts close (with the exception of a road loss to Mizzou). Turner Gill should have his troops ready to play.

South Florida @ West Virginia -7
South Florida has struggled big time in conference play with a 2-4 record. I can't see that getting any better against Pat White and West Virginia in Morgantown.

Washington @ California -35.5
It's Cal's turn!!!

USC -32 @ UCLA
The favorites sure are laying a ton of points this weeked in the Pac-10. Neuheisel will have UCLA fired up...until kickoff. Seriously, I can't see UCLA scoring points in this game. The only hope to cover is a defensive struggle. I don't see that happening either...

Missouri vs Oklahoma -17 (at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO)
Mizzou just gave up 40 to Kansas on a snowy field. The same field they will be playing at this weekend. Oklahoma should roll with the best offense in the country. Chase Daniel and company might be able to keep it close for a bit, but Mizzou is just overmatched.

Alabama vs Florida -10 (at Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA)
'Bama has squeaked by all year long. In a down year in the SEC, they have had a relatively easy path to the championship. However, for the first time this year, they will face a fast, diverse offense that will score at will. Saban deserves a lot of credit for returning the Crimson Tide to national prominence...but they will fall one game short of the big one. Tebow, Harvin, and man-genius Urban Meyer will hang 40+ on 'Bama and cover easily.

De La Hoya vs Pacquiao

Don't get boxing? Just don't see yourself getting into it? Do yourself a favor. Fire up your On-Demand and go to HBO's 24/7. You can get an inside look into the training for the upcoming fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. Watch this mini-series and then tell me you don't want to watch this fight...

ACC - Big Ten Challenge

The ACC - Big Ten Challenge just wrapped up their 10th year. Does anyone out there want to venture to guess how the series record has gone? How about this...ACC - 10, Big Ten - 0. I think the ACC needs to find a partner in this series...

Thoughts On News This Morning

- The big news out of Auburn today is that Tommy Tuberville has "resigned". This confirms every suspicion I had about people down south...they're dumb. In the words of Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder, they've gone "full retard" down there in Auburn. Trust me, no one wants to go "full retard"(on a side note, Tropic Thunder is hilarious). Here we have a coach over the past 10 years that has a .688 winning percentage, 7-3 against their in-state rival 'Bama, a 13-0 season, an SEC Championship, and a prestige around the country as a perennial top-15 team. One bad season for Auburn and one good season for 'Bama, and this is what one of the best coaches in college football gets. Who are they going to get that's any better? The college football world will be waiting...

- The St. Louis Cardinals made a move for San Diego Padres Shortstop Khalil Greene for unnamed players. Not an earth shattering move for the Cards, but a good one. Although it's not hard to do, it was an offensive upgrade over Izturis, although a slight drop-off on defense. Even if Greene bats around his career .248 (that isn't too far off from Izturis' .260 career avg.), he still adds a lot more power to the lineup than Izturis did. This is also a good move for the Padres. They will probably get some pitching - who doesn't need more pitching? - and this is probably a pure salary dump move. Freeing up $6.5 million/year helps their cause for trying to keep Jake Peavy on the team.

- The UNC Tarheels Basketball team mauled Michigan State last night...in Michigan. Granted, it was a "neutral" site in Detroit, it was still a thrashing. Either Michigan State is way overrated - which is quite possible since that is happening a lot in recent years - or UNC is one bad motha...

Sean Avery Suspended

Sean Avery, hockey player for the Dallas Stars, has been suspended by the NHL. He referred to his ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert, as "sloppy seconds". Pretty harsh in my opinion. We are living in a world of ever-growing political correctness....

Tuberville

If Auburn is really firing Tommy Tuberville like I am hearing....WOW. Talk about a knee-jerk reaction for one down year. Life is tough in the SEC...

Tuesday Morning Quarterback: My rebuttal

15 minutes for one TMQ on the crapper? Not possible, unless you have speed reading skills. That takes me forever to read. Granted, I'm retarded and read at about a 3 minutes per page clip. And also granted, shit flies out of my ass like there's a scary monster chasing it in my intestines. And once I'm done I don't like to sit there and wallow in my own stank. I have about a 4 page maximum for reading on the shitter.

OK, that's it. Good post, Steve.

Cardinals Related News

Read the following at your own risk for my reading/writing are at a 3rd grade level. Anyhow, here is some recent news in regards to the St. Louis Cardinals.

There are reports coming out that claim the Giants are close to signing Edgar Renteria (again). Terms have yet to be disclosed. Perhaps close to the 2yr/$18M that was stated earlier last month. IF this deal pans out what options are left for the Cardinals? One of the writers from the St. Louis Post thinks that Khalil Greene's $6.5M price tag is looking more attractive (via trade). I however don't want a career .248 avg at the SS position. How about a middle infielder that can handle leadoff duties? "Save" some money and get 2 for 1. Some other MI names that have been linked to the Cardinals include:

- Orlando Hudson (fa; leadoff capability however rumored to be looking for multi yr deal @ $10M per.)
- Ben Zobrist (via trade; rumors circulated about a Skip Schumacher for Zobrist in October)
- Rafael Furcal (this aint happening)
- David Eckstein (fa)
- Felipe Lopez (fa)
- Cesar Izturis (fa)

All other MI FA's:
- Orlando Cabrera
- Juan Castro
- Alex Cintron
- Craig Counsell
- Alex Cora
- Ray Durham
- Damion Easley
- Adam Everett
- Nomar Garciaparra
- Chris Gomez
- Mark Grudzielanek
- Jerry Hairston Jr
- Mark Loretta
- Ramon Martinez
- Nick Punto
- Luis Rivas
- Omar Vizquel

Anyhow, with the winter meetings taking place this upcoming week, more news is sure to come...

Other important dates:
Sunday 12/7/08 - last day for declared FA's to accept arbitration from original ballclub
Monday - Thursday 12/8 - 12/11 - winter meetings

ONE! MORE! YEAR!

ONE! MORE! YEAR!
Let’s not glaze over this Charlie Weis thing too quickly. Tyrone Willingham had a winning percentage at Notre Dame of .583. Charlie Weis? .571. And not much signs of improvement. Exhibit A being losing AT HOME to Syracuse this year. Syracuse. Ye of the firing-coach-mid-season ilk.

Yet Charlie Weis is given the vote of confidence after being given 4 years to turn it around. Willingham? Given 3 years, after which his contract was immediately bought out.

Who’s running this ship at Notre Dame? Charlie Weis was given a 10-year extension midway through his 1st year as a golden domer. An extension which was apparently written with such blind enthusiasm after 7 WHOLE GAMES that Notre Dame couldn’t afford to buy him out unless the Golden Dome itself was auctioned off.

Look, I don’t have a problem with giving a coach time to make his impression. The thing is, Notre Dame DOES have that problem (see: Ty Willingham). Weis has had 3 strong recruiting classes in a row. And sure, those in his ’06 recruiting class (after one full season on the job) are at most juniors in eligibility right now, depending on redshirts. I wouldn’t expect them to be a top 5 team. But with such talent, albeit young, coursing through the roster, I WOULD expect them not to embarrass themselves at this point. AND if Weis was worth the contract he signed, he could coach up his older, less-talented (but still solid, by most universities’ standards) players in combination with his younger, prized recruits to form a respectable team.

So with the notoriously high expectations at Notre Dame, why is he still around while Willingham was canned unceremoniously after 3 years? Here’s some possible reasons:
1) The contract is indeed SO poorly written that a buyout is just too cost-prohibitive. Hard to believe with the loaded, football-crazed ND alums / athletic department.
2) They don’t want to look like complete dumbasses, throwing a 10 year extension at Weis after 7 games, then canning him after 3 years later. Hard to believe, as giving such a lucrative extension 7 games into a coaching tenure couldn’t be considered anything but dumbassed. Why stop the dumassedness now?
3) Notre Dame actually believes he’s the man for the job. A 9-15 two-year span of football is grounds for beheading and castration typically at Notre Dame, but they think he’s the man for the job and they all of a sudden are taking the patient approach.
4) Dazz Raziss. Weis has had 4 years of being the head coach at Notre Dame, and has compiled a worse winning percentage than Willingham over 3 years. I’m not a proponent of the race card, I think it’s valid at times but most times abused. But in light of the stark contrast between the ND administration’s reaction to Charlie Weis’s crappy 4 years and Willingham’s crappy 3, can you completely discount there being any racial motivation behind Willingham’s firing? I believe that likely was NOT an issue, and his lack of stellar recruiting classes in combination with the on-field performance were the determining factors. But you couldn't immediately discount this theory as completely unreasonable. At best, it certainly doesn't look good on Notre Dame.
5) Notre Dame, alums and administration alike, loves fat people. And who doesn't? They're so jolly and fun. And who doesn't enjoy watching Weis gimp around the sidelines with his britches pulled up to his tits and sporting a man FUPA?

- Steve

Slow Sports Day...

Yup. The news today is slow. Scanning various sites today I have learned...

- Charlie Weis is safe for one more year at Notre Dame. Seriously, does anyone care? Weis makes a ton of money. Notre Dame makes a ton of money. Weis sucks. Notre Dame sucks. Let's move on.

- Plaxico Burress has been suspended for four games by the NFL. Let's see how much he will be suspended in "real life" by the judicial system. I have a feeling he will be made a public example get the maximum, and Rick Reilly will judge him in his next column.

- Michael Phelps is SI's Sportsman of the Year. He deserves that based on his physique alone. And he eats a ton. The two are not mutually exclusive...Phelps is living proof.

- Apparently Kyle Singler and Duke are the real deal this year. We'll see about that...

That's about it for now. See, slow news day.

Tuesday Morning Quarterback

This is probably the best mainstream weekly football column out there. Gregg Easterbrook breaks down each NFL week on Tuesdays on espn.com. He adds his two cents on the BCS this week as well. Josh Smith Speaks Sportscenter

To get things started, I’d like to post my three favorite Sportscenter Tandems and my least favorite:

- Scott Van Pelt (Who should be know as SVP when talking with friends about Sportscenter Anchors) and John Anderson
- SVP and Neil (Right Now!) Everett
- John Anderson and Neil Everett

...and my least favorite:

I’m not even sure these guys were ever together but it would be awful.
- Chris Berman and Stuart Scott.
This weekend when Berman saw a touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers, he felt he needed to play off the name of Green Bay Packers TE Donald Lee. He said, “Everybody doesn't like something, but nobody doesn't like Donald Lee”. You, Chris Berman, are a Douchebag.

Welcome to the Real Box Score

Welcome to The Real Box Score. This is going to be a blog for anything sports (news, opinions, random funny thoughts, etc.) all the freakin' time. I am going to give access to this account to any of my friends that I deem qualified to post here. I can't promise you much, but I can promise that you will be entertained.

Why start a blog about sports when countless ones already exist? Because I am bored. Because I'm not all that interested in the other ones. Because I feel like my friends are too smart or even dumb for their thoughts to be caged up in our inner circle. Because I can.
